While weight loss surgery is commonly used to benefit the morbidly obese, new research has suggested that bariatrics may also help those with more moderate obesity. This research has also revealed that weight loss surgery may help improve cases of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol more effectively than some traditional methods.
Morbid obesity is defined by a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more, while obesity begins at a BMI of 30 or greater. Both conditions are linked to a long list of health risks, and may also have social, psychological, and economic effects on patients. LA Bariatric Center offers weight loss surgery as a way to help reduce these risks, working to keep individuals healthy.
As no two patients are like, candidacy for these weight loss procedures depends on a number of individual factors. After deciding which procedure is the best fit for the patient, Dr. Korman and his team develop an individualized, long-term aftercare plan. Although weight loss surgery may not be an option for every mildly obese individual, LA Bariatric Center is willing to work with any patient whose health may be threatened by their weight.
While certain moderately obese patients may see results from exercise or medication, many others require more serious measures. If a patient is more than 100 pounds over their ideal body weight, suffering from health complications like high blood pressure or diabetes, or cannot achieve a healthy body weight for a sustained period of time even with medically supervised dieting, he or she could be a candidate for gastric bypass surgery or the LAP-BAND procedure for permanent weight loss.
If weight complications like high cholesterol or type 2 diabetes are interfering with your life, it is possible that weight loss surgery may be able to help you.
