According to the latest statistics released by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, rhinoplasty was the fifth most popular procedure performed by plastic surgeons in 2012. People want to be comfortable with the way they look, and often a "nose job" is an effective way to enhance one's appearance and subsequently, self-esteem. As the nose is the most central feature on the face, it is front and center during every interpersonal encounter we have in our lives. As a result of its prominent location, it is typically the first thing people notice and even mild deformities can be obvious, according to New York plastic surgeon Dr. Robert J. Morin.
While it is a relatively common procedure, rhinoplasty is still an operation, and like all operations, it carries a risk of complications. "The nose is an incredibly complex structure that is responsible for not only facial aesthetics, but also proper airway function," Dr. Morin explains. "This is why it is important, when choosing a rhinoplasty surgeon, to find a board-certified surgeon who performs a large number of rhinoplasties every year."
Dr. Morin is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This is the only board that certifies plastic surgeons in the United States. Dr. Morin is highly trained in cosmetic surgical procedures, including rhinoplasty. Beginning his career by correcting facial birth defects and deformities such as cleft lip and cleft palate, Dr. Morin has since donated much of his time, traveling to developing countries to perform these types of surgeries. This, he claims, has given him a unique perspective on nasal surgery.
"Reconstruction of kids faces, reconstruction of lip and nasal deformities, led me to an excellent understanding of the nose which has allowed me to really perform rhinoplasties the way that they are supposed to be performed," explains the doctor.
Dr. Morin's extensive research and study in the area of craniofacial surgery has also made him a specialist in reconstructive and cosmetic surgery of the head and face. The doctor's special interest in nasal reconstruction and cleft rhinoplasty sets him apart from other surgeons, and allows him to achieve aesthetically pleasing, as well as functionally sound, results, through a variety of rhinoplasty techniques.
"Rhinoplasty can be a life altering procedure," says Dr. Morin. "Lives are changed forever, for the better."
