Future Electronics, a global leading distributor of electronic components, announced immediate availability of Renesas' ultra-low-power Wi-Fi solutions with integrated GainSpan Wi-Fi adapters.
Wi-Fi is the most extensively deployed networking infrastructure and is the connectivity medium of choice for products in diverse markets, providing high levels of encryption and security via WPA2, achieving high throughput (72Mbps in 802.11n 1x1 format), and working over distances up to 100m.
To ease incorporation of Wi-Fi connectivity into ultra-low-power system designs, Renesas has partnered with GainSpan to provide integrated modules that contain all the necessary Wi-Fi components - baseband, radio, power amplifier and antenna. Their certified wireless connectivity solutions will interface to any Renesas MCU through an SPI or UART interface.
Renesas and GainSpan serial to Wi-Fi adapter boards come pre-loaded with serial to Wi-Fi firmware, supporting an embedded HTTP server with Wi-Fi and IP network configuration pages, as well as the limited AP capability for ease of provisioning and direct connectivity to smart phones/tablets. Wi-Fi client applications are also provided to highlight the connectivity to the Internet and to innovative Cloud providers, which are offering leading M2M networking services. Wi-Fi drivers are available, or in development, for most Renesas microcontrollers, including RL78 and RX. The drivers have a small footprint so that they may be used with the IAR Embedded Workbench Kickstart Edition. The Wi-Fi adapter boards have built-in external flash for reliable over-the-air firmware upgrades and factory restore configuration, as well as data storage for web pages, for example.
These adapters ensure a friendly out-of-box experience; you simply plug in the USB cable to power up the board, then launch your web browser in your PC and connect with the sensors, or download the iPhone app and do the same from your iPhone. On an iPhone, no configuration is needed. It is also compatible with iPad, as well as being Android app supported.
