While exercise is important year-round, the hot summer months can put an extra strain on those who work out. Hot weather can create a number of different problems, making routine exercise tougher to do comfortably and safely. For those people who aren't sure how they can safely work out during the heat of the summer, New Jersey's Dr. Oscar Vazquez of Active Orthopedics offered some helpful tips and advice.
"Exercising in the summer heat can have a number of damaging consequences if the proper precautions aren't taken," offers Dr. Vazquez. "Heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and dehydration can leave people light-headed, nauseous, and susceptible to more serious health issues. When exercising in the heat, there are some simple ways people can help avoid these issues and stay safe."
Offering advice on the steps people can take to reduce their risks while exercising in the heat, Dr. Vazquez explains, "One of the simplest ways people can stay safe is by staying hydrated. Drinking before, during, and after your workout can help you avoid dehydration and the negative side effects associated with it. Additionally, people should take note of the time of day - avoiding the hottest midday hours in favor of the early morning or evening can help you stay safe."
"There are a number of other ways people can safely exercise in hot weather," Dr. Vazquez offers. "Lightweight clothing can be helpful, as well as choosing a less vigorous exercise routine than you might typically partake in. Most of all, people should be listening to their bodies. If you're feeling faint, dizzy, or nauseous, make sure to stop exercising, as pushing forward can only increase your risk for health concerns."
Offering his final thoughts on exercising in the summer heat, Dr. Vazquez concluded with this: "Exercising in the hot summer months can be done if the proper precautions and extra care are taken. Neglecting to do so can cause a great deal of harm, so make sure to exercise safely in the heat."
