Being diagnosed with skin cancer is terrifying for any patient. Fortunately, with early detection and proper treatment by a board-certified dermatologist, no patient ever needs to feel alone in treating skin cancer.
Dr. Sina Aboutalebi, of Texas-based Northstar Dermatology, discusses the importance of vigilant skin cancer screenings and skin cancer detection.
"Skin cancer affects millions of Americans every year, more than any other cancer combined," says Dr. Aboutalebi, "Though it is the most common cancer, it is also the most treatable. Early detection and treatment is key in preventing it from spreading, and the earlier treatment begins, the better it is for the patient."
Dr. Aboutalebi explains that education and knowledge can be helpful in the prevention of skin cancer. Genetics can play a role in skin cancer, according to Dr. Aboutalebi. Since the majority of skin cancer cases are due to overexposure to UV rays, it is important to be smart when it comes to protecting your skin. Dr. Aboutalebi recommends that his patients wear sunscreen or a hat if they are going to be outside for long periods of time. While this will not make them immune to skin cancer, it is important to first take preventative measures. He adds that patients also greatly increase their risk for skin cancer by using indoor tanning beds.
"If you see a large, discolored, or unusual mole on your skin that concerns you, see a doctor as soon as possible," say Dr. Aboutalebi. "Taking that first step to address the concern may be instrumental in stopping the problem from getting worse," he adds. Skin cancer is usually found on areas of the skin most exposed to the sun, including the face, neck, and back. Treatment for the disease will vary depending on the size and severity of the cancer itself. The most common treatments are radiation, and surgery. Most skin cancer surgeries can be done quickly, and effectively, with minimal scarring.
During a skin cancer screening, Dr. Aboutalebi works closely with each of his patients, discussing their medical and family history, and establishing a personalized treatment plan.
"I encourage my patients to closely examine their own skin on a regular basis, and to be mindful of any changes they see," he adds, "Skin cancer prevention and smart sun care should be practiced year-round, not just during the summer months. I encourage any patient seeking advice on skin cancer prevention or cancer screenings to contact me."
