Age can bring many great things, including wisdom and life experience. However, it can also mean the appearance of unwanted wrinkles and fine lines on the face. Fortunately, Dr. Charlotte Rhee, M.D., director of Long Island Plastic Surgery in New York, gives patients a more youthful, refreshed look with the injectable dermal filler, Juvéderm®.
"Juvéderm® is an injectable gel that is highly effective for reversing the many signs of aging in the face," Dr. Rhee explains, "Not only does it correct the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, it also adds volume to thin lips, and gives a smoother appearance to the cheeks." Dr. Rhee explains that Juvéderm® is injected with a syringe into a targeted area. The amount of the product used will depend on the size of the area being treated.
Dr. Rhee adds that Juvéderm® is made from hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in skin. "Hyaluronic acid works well with collagen and elastin, both of which support and add shape to the skin," Dr. Rhee says, "My patients love that this filler helps stimulate a natural process in skin. Treatment usually takes about 30 minutes, and no pre-testing is necessary before the injection, since Juvéderm® is not a toxin."
Dr. Rhee says that side-effects associated with the procedure are generally mild, and may include temporary redness, bruising or swelling. Patients can see results immediately after the injection. While there is usually little downtime following the procedure, patients are advised to relax their facial muscles for around 24 hours following treatment.
"What my patients love most of all is that Juvéderm® treatments are long-lasting, and leave them with a very natural look," Dr. Rhee concludes, "Results typically last 6 to 9 months, and can last even longer with a simple 'follow-up' treatment a few weeks after the initial treatment. I encourage anyone who is interested in learning more about dermal fillers to contact their doctor to see if Juvéderm® is right for them."
