Finding out you have skin cancer is frightening, finding the right treatment can also be trying. Fortunately, there are a number of skin cancer treatments that have been proven as effective as traditional surgery, oftentimes these treatments are less invasive as well. One of these treatments is MOHS Surgery.
New Jersey-based practice Advanced Laser & Skin Cancer Center devotes a significant amount of the practice to skin cancer treatment and education. Other treatment options include laser surgery, cryosurgery, and chemotherapy.
The center's practitioners, Dr. Gangaram Ragi, and Dr. Monika Srivastava, recommend Mohs Surgery as an efficient, minimally-invasive treatment for common skin cancers. The board certified surgeons have extensive study and experience in dermatology and surgery.
Mohs Surgery is the practice of removing layers of skin tissue to eliminate skin cancer, while still preserving healthy skin. The procedure, which takes up to 4 hours, is performed under local anesthesia, and involves an injection of numbing medication to the area where skin cancer is located. The doctor will then use a scalpel to remove a portion of cancerous skin, along with a very small amount of healthy underlying tissue. The cancerous tissue is then examined to ensure the cancer has not spread. The patient will have to wait as the tissue is examined. If more cancer is found, the process is repeated until all the layers of cancer are removed. Following surgery, doctors use stitches to close the incisions. Stitches are normally removed two weeks after surgery. There is little downtime or scarring associated with this surgery.
Mohs Surgery can be an option for a number of skin cancer diagnoses, including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, as well as certain kinds of melanoma. This type of surgery is considered especially effective for patients who have previously undergone treatment for skin cancer, and therefore have a higher risk for the cancer recurring. Mohs Surgery also offers an extremely high cure rate for skin cancers.
Exploring skin cancer treatment options can often be an overwhelming task. However, Drs. Ragi and Srivastava work closely with each of their patients, educating them on all of their treatment and surgical options, including Mohs Surgery.
Dr. Ragi and Dr. Srivastava practice at Advanced Laser & Skin Cancer Center in Teaneck, New Jersey. Those interested in exploring Mohs Surgery, or any other skin cancer surgeries or treatments, are encouraged to call 201-836-9696, or visit http://www.advancedlaserandskincancercenter.com.
