When it comes to weight-loss surgery, procedures that usually come to mind is Gastric Bypass or LAP-BAND® surgery. Few people are as familiar with Gastric Imbrication (also known as "Laparoscopic Greater Curvature Plicatio"), a fairly new surgical technique for weight-loss. Dr. Jeremy E. Korman, of the L.A. Bariatric Center in Marina Del Ray, California, offers this cutting-edge, minimally-invasive procedure for patients looking for an alternative to invasive surgery.
Dr. Korman explains that gastric imbrication surgery is an excellent choice for patients who are not considered good candidates for more invasive surgery. Generally, candidates for this surgery are obese men and women who want to lead a healthier lifestyle, and can only achieve that goal through surgical intervention.
Gastric imbrication is a laparoscopic surgery, performed on an outpatient basis. During the procedure, the stomach is folded over several times, until the stomach pouch is sufficiently reduced in size. Stomach tissue does not need to be cut or stapled like it does with gastric bypass surgery, and, unlike LAP-BAND® surgery no medical devices are implanted. In fact, the digestive system remains completely intact, while only the size of the stomach is reduced. The smaller stomach size reduces the amount of food that a patient can take in, so patients will feel full even when they eat less food, enabling them to lose weight.
According to Dr. Korman, there are several advantages to the gastric imbrication procedure. For one, there is no need to remove or reroute any parts of the digestive system, which remains intact with this procedure. A second advantage is that it is minimally-invasive, and involves no cutting or tissue removal. Finally, the procedure is safer than other weight-loss procedures, since there is no cutting involved with the treatment there is less risk for any surgical complications, such as infections or bleeding. The procedure also offers patients a fairly short recovery period, with many patients returning to normal activities within one week.
Dr. Korman notes that, because gastric imbrication is still a fairly new procedure, more is still being learned about the long-term success rates of patients who have undergone the treatment. However, many patients have already experienced successful weight-loss following this cutting-edge procedure.
