Each year, millions seek a surgical procedure that will help drastically reduce their weight, and help them lead a healthier lifestyle. Sleeve Gastrectomy (or the "gastric sleeve") is one procedure known to improve a patient's health, as well as their overall lifestyle.
Dr. Jeremy E. Korman, of the California-based L.A. Bariatric Center, says that the sleeve gastrectomy procedure is one of the fastest-growing weight loss procedures in the country today. The procedure is designed to help reduce the size of a patient's stomach, therefore also reducing the amount of food the body can take in, helping the patient lose weight and become healthier.
According to Dr. Korman, the gastric sleeve procedure can either be performed openly, by making an incision in the abdomen, or laproscopically, by making several small incisions and allowing a camera to guide the surgery. Dr. Korman explains that many patients will choose to have the procedure done through laparoscopy, since it is less invasive, as well as safer.
During the procedure, Dr. Korman removes more than half of the stomach. The stomach that is left behind is removed, leaving behind a thin, vertical "sleeve" that is approximately the size of the banana. Surgical staples will then be used to keep the patient's new stomach closed. Unlike other bariatric procedures, a gastric sleeve surgery will not involve moving or rerouting the intestine, or implanting any artificial devices. Dr. Korman notes that, because the surgery involves removing a large part of the stomach, the procedure will not be reversible.
Following surgery, patients may experience some belly pain, nausea, or soreness. Dr Korman notes that pain can be treated with medication, and patients will be given specific instructions on what they can eat following surgery. Since this is a fairly new procedure, more is still being learned about the long-term results of the surgery.
Dr. Korman adds that many of his patients are able to experience significant weight-loss after undergoing this procedure, and can maintain their results with lifestyle changes, including an improved diet and exercise plan. Dr. Korman offers patients added support after surgery, through his bariatric surgical follow-up program, which is designed to help patients meet their future weight-loss and wellness goals.
