Bruxism is a common dental problem, in which a patient excessively grinds their teeth and clenches their jaw. Although this habit does not normally cause serious issues, it can occasionally lead to tooth sensitivity, and aching jaw muscles. Fortunately, a Nocieceptive Trigeminal Inhibition (NTI) splint can help correct and treat this problem.
Dr. Kim Orth, of Core Dental in Calgary, Alberta, says that an NTI splint is a small, mouth guard-like device, which can help prevent regular tooth grinding. Additionally, an NTI splint can also help prevent and treat other serious oral health complications which can arise because of chronic tooth grinding. NTI splints are also useful for alleviating pain associated with temporomandibular joint (TMJ), a disorder where the jaw is misaligned.
Dr. Orth explains that, while bruxism and TMJ are different issues, NTI splints can ease both conditions. Before the splint can be created, however, Dr. Orth will first evaluate a patient's symptoms, to determine the exact source of their pain or headaches. Next, Dr. Orth will create customized NTI splints for each patient, which fit over the top, front teeth, with only slight contact between the top and bottom teeth. The splints will keep the back teeth separated, and help shift the jaw back into a more relaxed, comfortable position, while reducing clenching and wear on the teeth.
Dr. Orth says that patients who are suffering from chronic pain caused by irregular, worn teeth, or jaw misalignment should consider an NTI splint, which can be worn overnight. NTI splints can be created for both adults, as well as for children, he adds. Dr. Orth explains that an NTI splint can significantly reduce any pain or discomfort felt in the jaw, and by extension, improve a patient's overall health.
