Rhinoplasty is one of the most in-demand cosmetic procedures today. Manhattan-based plastic surgeon, Dr. Robert Guida, recently took a moment to discuss the continuing demand among his patients for the surgery.
"Today, more than ever before, patients of all different ethnic groups are seeking rhinoplasty, to correct nasal imperfections," Dr. Guida says, "No matter what a patient's background, they all want the same thing: to look and feel their best."
Dr. Guida explains that, while cosmetic nasal surgery in this country has traditionally targeted Caucasians, it is currently in great demand among patients of African, Asian, and Hispanic descent. Most patients who seek rhionplasty want to raise a flat bridge, improve enlarged nostrils, raise a flat bridge, or remove nasal humps.
Ethnic rhinoplasty is considered a type of specialty rhinoplasty, according to Dr. Guida. "Special care must be taken to maintain the distinct ethnic features of a patient's face when reshaping the nose, so their overall facial harmony remains intact," he explains, "The goal of this surgery is to improve a person's appearance, while not drastically changing it."
Dr. Guida adds that a crucial element of his practice is establishing excellent communication with his patients. "I believe it is important for every patient to have a detailed understanding of the procedure prior to surgery," he says, "This will allow the patient better communicate any specific needs or desires they may have."
Dr. Guida uses the technology of photographic morphing, so his patients can have a better idea of how their looks will be improved following surgery. During surgery, Dr. Guida combines traditional rhinoplasty techniques with contemporary reconstructive techniques to meet the goals of each patient.
Dr. Guida adds that ethnic rhinoplasty is a highly-customizable procedure, and should never be thought of as a "one-size-fits-all" surgery. "Each nose, like each patient is unique, so every rhinoplasty will be quite different," says Dr. Guida, "The goal of any rhinoplasty, including ethnic rhinoplasty, is to provide a patient with natural-looking results that help them look and feel more confident."
