Regardless of age, everyone wants a beautiful, sparkling smile. However, young patients may experience a variety of dental issues, such as gum disease, and tooth decay. These risk factors make regular dental visits for young patients essential.
Dr. Deborah Pilla, of New York City-based Park View Pediatric Dentistry, explains that comprehensive oral exams should start as early as possible, in order to encourage healthy dental care habits for children early on. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) children should see a dentist by the age of 1, or within six months of the appearance of their first tooth.
According to Dr. Pilla, regular dental examinations are the best way of preventing serious issues such as gum disease, and tooth loss or decay. Usually, a comprehensive dental exam consists of X-rays, which provide the dentist a full view of the child's mouth, periodontal screenings, which will help diagnose gum diseases like gingivitis or periodontitis, and Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) screenings.
Dr. Pilla adds that 3-D versions of a child's mouth can be created, using impressions. These models will allow Dr. Pilla a thorough view of each tooth, which will then be analyzed to determine the presence of any abnormalities. The models will also help Dr. Pilla determine which teeth will need treatment.
Dr. Pilla says that good brushing and flossing habits are key in preventing serious dental issues in young children. Parents can help their child learn proper oral care procedures early on, by teaching them how to brush and floss their teeth. Dr. Pilla says that parents can start flossing their child's teeth, starting around the age of 4. By the age of 8, children can usually begin to start flossing on their own. Dr. Pilla also recommends that children use toothpastes and rinses rich in fluoride. Fluoride, she says, is the best way to prevent tooth decay or cavities in children. Dr. Pilla also recommends that Children should eat a balance diet, which will help them develop strong teeth resistant to decay.
Dr. Pilla offers comprehensive oral exams, as well as other dental procedures, at her practice, Park View Pediatric Dentistry in New York City. She works closely with each of her young patients and their families, to provide them with the best care possible.
