The Royal Kona Resort is one of the original rest and tourism establishments built in the town of Kailua Kona, on Hawaii's Big Island. The Resort first opened in 1968, and has since welcomed thousands of visitors from every walk of life - newlyweds, families with children, retired couples, sports enthusiasts and more.
In addition to providing hospitality services, the Resort also publishes informational articles on various aspects of Kailua Kona, the Kona region and the Big Island in general; the articles cover a wide range of topics that can be of interest to current and prospective visitors. The latest article is a brief introduction to the Big Island climate, and talks about the wildly diverging micro-climates that exist in various parts of the island. Due to its mountainous geography and tropical ocean location, Hawaii Island has a remarkably diverse set of climate zones, a fact that is belied by its size.
The article talks about the various climate zones, such as the arid North coast of Hawaii that receives a mere 10 inches of rainfall per year; on the other end, there are areas such as Hilo that are shadowed by the island's mountains, which capture clouds and trigger near-constant rainfall - Hilo on the island's Eastern side gets all of 160 inches per year, making it the rainiest town in America.
The town of Kailua Kona is somewhere in the middle of the scale - 20 or so inches of rain on the coast, more as one moves up the mountain slope. This amount of precipitation lets greenery flourish, while leaving the vast majority of days in a year bright and sun-lit. The climate is one of a number of reasons why this area of the island has proven to be a popular spot for Big Island family vacations.

This is something that Donn Beach was aware of and why he was able to find such great success with his Don the Beachcomber restaurants. Don the Beachcomber is the prototypical Tiki restaurant. And most of the Tiki restaurants operating today are based on it in one way or another. That's one of the reasons that Tiki restaurants are as celebrated now as they were decades ago.
