Image sensors help convert optical images into electronic signals, and are used in numerous applications such as consumer electronics, automotive, medical, defense and industrial among others. Charge-coupled device (CCD) and complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) are the two main technologies used for image sensors, particularly for devices like cameras. CMOS chips incorporate the logic needed to produce an image, thus lowering the cost of the target device; they also consume lesser power. Fabrication costs of CMOS sensors are further lowered since they can have processing circuits on the same chip as opposed to CCD image sensors, which have them on separate chips. As a result, CMOS image sensors are expected to witness growing demand, and account for over 95% of the global market by the end of the forecast period.
