Recently, Connecticut ash trees have been dying at an alarming rate. This increase in ash tree mortality is due strictly to the introduction and activity of the Emerald Ash Borer, an invasive Asian beetle. The beetle’s destruction of Connecticut’s ash trees has put great stress on the remaining ash tree population. The beetle has been here for a total of 2 or 3 years, and their number do not look to be diminishing anytime soon. The beetle has made its way to New Haven, concerning residents whose historical trees have been there for decades. The beetles cannot be seen from the outside of the tree as they are situated inside the bark. The larvae feed from inside the trunk - the only living section left of the tree. The beetle carves a tunnel through the bark to the other side of the tree, destroying its structure and killing the tree in the process.
Dr. Claire Rutledge, from the Connecticut Department of Entomology, explains the beetles are responsible for dead ash trees all over the state. Dr. Rutledge credits the Emerald Ash Borer’s with wiping out an entire field of ash trees in very little time. In the sixth year of infestation, 100 percent of the ash trees will be gone. Some forests have already lost half of the ash trees within them.
Luckily, there is a solution to preserving the ash tree population. The Forestry Division in Connecticut has done extensive research to find preventative measures that can be taken to preserve this species of trees. The motto they go by is “buy local, burn local”. This will help to keep local firewood local, and keep pests from entering the state. A potential fighter of this disease is a tiny wasp from Asia, and is the only known predator of the Emerald Ash Borer. Ideally this wasp will eat the beetles, and contain and control their spread. Once an ash tree is affected, it will die, but these wasps will be able to preserve the health of future ash trees.
