KidsCare of the Rockies, a Colorado pediatric hospice, recently created a blog that answers the question "What is pediatric lung disease?" Though there are few ways to prevent this illness, a number of treatment options are available, including hospice care services for children and families who have chosen to forego additional medical treatment.

Pediatric lung disease, commonly called childhood interstitial lung disease, refers to a group of illnesses that affect the lungs and respiratory system of babies, children, and teens. The rare disease causes chronic coughing, rapid breathing, and shortness of breath. It can also damage tissue in the lungs and bronchial tubes. Those with pediatric lung disease can experience decreased lung function, reduced blood oxygen levels, and disrupted breathing. Research has not been able to indicate a clear cause of interstitial lung disease, though it may be caused by birth defects, immune system disorders, exposure to radiation and environmental factors, and bone marrow or lung transplants.

Various medicines and supportive therapies, as well as lung transplants, can help children with lung disease retain a higher quality of life and continue to function as normally as possible. Families can also take steps to prevent infections and other illnesses that can worsen the condition. While there are many resources available to help families manage pediatric lung disease, there may come a time when hospice services are necessary. Children who require repeated trips to the emergency room for respiratory failure or lung infections, no longer wish to be hospitalized after repeated stays, or no longer wish to be intubated may prefer to live their last few months in the comfort of their homes instead of pursuing additional medical treatment.
