There is an increased frequency of PFO in patients suffering from migraine- a frequency that almost parallels the presence of PFO in stroke. Currently, PFO closure is indicated for prevention of recurring stroke due to embolisms. A string of clinical trials are now underway to establish the relation between PFO to migraine especially. A positive outcome establishing this relation in any of these trials will lead to an increased acceptance of PFO closure in patients with migraine, as opposed to temporary relief from drugs. The medical device industry is also bracing itself in hope of clinical trials like the PREMIUM, with a strong pipeline of improved PFO closure devices slated for release in the next couple of years.
