The dental radiology equipment market includes extra oral radiology and intra oral radiology devices; with intra oral dental x-rays being most commonly used. Digital sensors are used as a substitute for intra oral radiographic films. They produce a filmless digital image of the dental structure. Intra oral radiology equipment is used as the first step of diagnosis in dental clinics. This equipment produces a highly detailed radiograph of the teeth and surrounding structures. These x-rays or digital images help dentists diagnose cavities, health of tooth root and the bone surrounding the tooth. It provides a total picture of teeth and the jaw bone.
Extra oral digital radiological units are used to generate x-rays to digitally depict or identify entities of the dental structures and bone in the head and neck region. Digital devices have been more popular than film based units since 2001.
Both intra oral and extra oral systems are now moving towards filmless digital devices. This trend has resulted in the conversion of film based systems to digital ones by 20% annually, in the US and Europe.
