Carlsbad resident Tom Tarantino, current Athletic Director at The Bishop’s School in La Jolla, has been named Athletic Director of the Army and Navy Academy following a national search. Tarantino succeeds John Maffucci, who is retiring as Athletic Director at year end after a distinguished 54 year career at the Academy.
Tarantino has a long and impressive career as a teacher, coach and athletic administrator in both public and independent schools. A graduate of Springfield College, a school with a national reputation in sports education, Tarantino began his career as a physical education teacher and coach at St. Rose of Lima and St. Mary’s High School in New York.
In 1986, he became Athletic Director and Boy’s basketball coach at St. Dominic’s High School in Oyster Bay, New York. While there, he coordinated the athletic program and physical education curriculum while at that same time serving as Vice President of the NSCHSAA, the governing body for independent school sports. As head basketball coach, his teams won four NSCHSAA titles as well as the 1996 NY state private school championship. He was named 1995 and 1996 Long Island Newsday basketball “Coach of the Year.”
In 1996, Tarantino moved to California where he became a Health Education Teacher and boys Head Basketball Coach at Carlsbad High School. While there, he rebuilt the basketball program, culminating in winning the 2000 San Diego section Division 1 championship. He was named the 2000 North County Times and San Diego Union Tribune Basketball “Coach of the Year.”
In 2000, Tarantino was hired at The Bishop’s School as Athletic Director, Boy’s Basketball Coach, Camp Director and Physical Education Director. He coordinated athletic programs for all boys and girls in grades 7-12 consisting of 76 teams, 102 coaches and 80 percent of the eligible students. He is credited with establishing the first Independent School lacrosse program in San Diego County. Under his leadership, The Bishop’s School won 27 San Diego Section CIF championships and 40 league championships. As Head Basketball coach, he was again named 2001 Union Tribune “Coach of the Year.”
Tarantino joins Army Navy as the school enters its second century. “With his background and experience, Tom Tarantino is seen by our administration as the perfect choice to succeed John Maffucci, whose own distinguished career spanned more than fifty years” said Academy president, Brig. Gen. Steve Bliss. “He is a perfect fit for our school.”
