"Advansys advise on the mistakes companies have made in Social Media Marketing"
Social Media Marketing has been one of the hottest subjects of the past year or two and it for many it seems as though there has been a kind of overload and that the returns from social media have not been as expected.
There are lots of possibilities as to why many ecommerce companies may have found that this great goldmine of customers did not produce instant up swings of sales: Many companies tried heavy handed tactics that actually pushed customers away, other companies attempted to achieve social engagement when their product really isn’t one that garners a social scene, and some companies were just not sure of how to even go about social marketing in the first place and made a mess of it.
The common theme to these problems is a lack of knowledge and appreciation of the difference between SMM and normal Internet Marketing. Regular paid Internet Marketing like Adwords or banner advertising is just like real world advertising, high volumes of output, largely unfocussed and definitely impersonal. Even Search Engine Optimisation has little personal focus, instead aiming to impress a mathematical formula to ensure that that your site creates a result with a bigger number than your competitors.
Social Media Marketing is a different kettle of fish altogether. Your focus audience is a group of individuals, not a demographic which means that while you can feed information out to a wide group, you must be prepared to enter into discussions on a one to one basis. You must also expect to feed the group more information than you will receive back (at least at first) and to always remember that groups are SOCIAL, not business related so make sure that you allow your personality to shine through.
For the operators of an Ecommerce Website this means that rather than only posting product information, Facebook and Twitter should also be used to answer questions from individuals, work through support questions and also to expose any frivolous information that happens during the day. The key here is engagement and consistency of sale rather than a massive increase in profits.
