Cheaperlaptop.com announced this week that a trend may be developing in laptop computer purchases. Less expensive machines continue to sell well despite the recession. As more models of reliable, cheap laptops become available on the market for less than $600, it seems consumers are spending money on them instead of the more costly options in the $1,500 - $2,000 price bracket.

"Eight years ago, a typical laptop would have cost well over a thousand dollars," said Donovan Tenby of CheaperLaptop.com. "Here in 2010, cheap notebooks can now be purchased for under 600 dollars, with specifications to satisfy all but the most passionate 3D gamers. Sure, we'd all rather have a top of the range aluminum Macbook Pro or quad-core Thinkpad on our laps, but in tough economic times wallet straps and purse strings are tightening fast. Prices are dropping even lower in the netbook market with great deals to be had for under $200. We may see a sub-50 dollar netbook in the next few years."

A growing number of manufacturers offer laptop computers with smaller hard drives, less power duration and limited capabilities for less money. Consumers are buying them. They are following the common practice of cutting back wherever possible and doing more with less. The growing trend is to keep a desktop computer at home or at the office for multitasking and heavy projects, and bring along a lighter, less sophisticated, cheaper laptop with them when they are on the go.

Consumers are using the no frills units to accomplish basic daily "chores" on their computers. These include checking email, communicating through social media accounts, Youtube viewing, and typing up simple word processing documents for homework assignments or business agreements.

CheaperLaptop.com has found through its website's user reviews and feedback comments that often these basic computing tasks are gradually becoming the primary purpose for computers. As a result, the larger, more sophisticated versions are not replaced as they age. Site reviewers are not shy about the fact that the less expensive machines are often notorious for a shortened battery life and slower speed. Still, consumers continue to buy these models despite the limitations as a trade-off to spending more money they cannot afford. Despite the drawbacks, most users are still content with the products.

As the recession continues, consumers are sticking with the basic necessities. Bigger laptops with larger screens, more memory and glamorous programs are considered a luxury in lean times. Instead, items of practicality and necessity are the common purchase.
