"90% of survey respondents say the symptoms of lactose intolerance are more severe than commonly thought."
In four separate market surveys conducted by Ritter Pharmaceuticals and Engage Health, Inc., 90% of lactose intolerant individuals reported moderate to severe symptoms of lactose intolerance. For those who suffer from lactose intolerance, the symptoms can be painful and have a significant impact on one's lifestyle, even though lactose intolerance is not generally thought of as a serious condition.
Over 2,500 responses were collected from the surveys of adults who are lactose intolerant. The most common symptom reported was gas (85%), followed by diarrhea (71%), bloating (70%) and cramps (65%). The symptoms of lactose intolerance occurred after consuming dairy, with a vast majority describing their symptoms as moderate to severe.
Consuming milk or other dairy products brings on lactose intolerance symptoms. Individuals who lack the enzyme (lactase) necessary to digest lactose can experience gas, abdominal pain and bloating, cramping and diarrhea – the usual symptoms of lactose intolerance.
There is a popular misconception that those who suffer from lactose intolerance can simply avoid dairy products and avoid the symptoms. The problem is that dairy products are hard to avoid. Many foods contain "hidden" dairy products, especially foods in restaurants where consumers are unaware of the ingredients. Popular prepared foods can also contain dairy, or lactose, as well. This leaves lactose intolerant individuals open to experiencing the symptoms of lactose intolerance, even if they are attempting to avoid all dairy products.
Trying to counter the symptoms of lactose intolerance by avoiding dairy can lead to other health risks, such as lack of calcium and vitamin D – nutrients easily obtained through dairy products. Lactase supplements, such as Lactaid®, and dairy substitutes commonly recommended by physicians for lactose intolerance symptoms were reported as being satisfactory by only 29% of the survey respondents.
When asked if lactose intolerance affects their daily activities or social life, 82% of consumers in the study said their daily activities were affected, and 79% reported an impact on their social lives.
The survey results were published in the Lactose Intolerance Market Analysis in April 2010. If you would like to learn more about lactose intolerance and its prevalence, visit http://www.lactagen.com .
